Holiday Baking

Who doesn’t appreciate deliciously baked cookie during the hoilday season? Grinches and humbugs, that’s who. Otherwise, you should find something for everyone on my list of treats on my recommended recipes for 2013 holiday baking season!

For your chocolate feigns, I suggest Martha Stewart’s Outrageous Chocolate Cookies:

From marthastewart.com

For your lemon lovers, Two Peas and their Pod’s Lemon Sugar Cookies :

For your classic admirers, King Arthur Flour’s Gingerbread cookies:

For a fun, festive treat, try your hand at King Arthur Flour’s red and white pinwheels:

And for your celebrators of Hanukkah (sure it’s over but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the appropriate cookies!), rugelach! I used the Fannie Farmer’s Cookbook recipe but Barefoot Contessa’s recipe is very similar:

apricot rugelach

All these recipes have been taste tested and have received high-marks from all the judges. So go ahead and give them a try! As far as effort, I would say I’ve listed them in order of difficulty. Pinwheels and rugelach are not for the faint of heart. They require a few rounds of refrigeration as well as shaping and molding.

What are some of your favorite Christmas cookies?

Now Bake This

Eureka! I finally found a cut-out sugar cookie recipe I like! Do you know how hard it is to find the perfect recipe for sugar cookies? I’ve tried lots and they usually turn out with mediocre results. This week I took a chance with this one from Allrecipes.com and I’m definitely a fan!

The ONLY thing I would change to the recipe would be to add a teaspoon of lemon extract because I like my sugar cookies a little citrusy. No matter what recipe I try, I always am sure to add a teaspoon of lemon extract and maybe some lemon zest too. I tend not to add any icing to my sugar cookies so I feel they need something extra to make up for the lack of icing.

I also made candy cane blossoms with pink sprinkles:

Who says cookies are just for Christmas? I will find a way to make for every holiday/occasion! Too bad my valentine doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth so I’ll be sharing these treats with friends and family…and self. What? Gotta maintain quality control somehow, right?

Weekend Recap

I kicked off February with a bang! This weekend was so full of fun. On Saturday I helped my friend Lucy set up for her son’s first birthday party. It was adorable! Lucy planned it with an underwater theme in mind and it was just the cutest:

I wish I had a closer picture of the jellyfish decorations. They were a group effort but they were so worthwhile! The tutorial to make them can be found here. The idea for the birthday banner hanging in the back came from this blog. Other decorations included the food like the octopus veggie dip:

This idea came from FamilyFun Magazine/Spoonful.com

And fish and sea turtle cookies that I made:

The green “icing” on the turtles is actually dyed and thinned out cookie dough that is applied before baking! That genius of an idea came from this blogpost.

But the real showpiece was the birthday cake! Lucy made a fun fish-shaped cake inspired by this tutorial by the domestic diva herself, Martha Stewart! The cake is this week’s Now Bake This recommendation:

You can make this beauty using your favorite cake recipe and icing. It was as delicious as it was precious! Lucy’s definitely got a gift for decorating, am I right? She’s totally making my kids cakes when the time comes!

The party was so fun and sweet and so glad Lucy included me in the festivities and party planning process! You know we had a ball finding all these great ideas on Pinterest! Such an inspiring time suck, haha!

Did you party it up this weekend too at a superbowl shindig? Did you bake something for it? If that’s the case, be sure to link up with Jess and me!
